Citizens Advice Medway is a registered charity that offers free, independent and impartial advice to the whole of Medway on a range of issues including Housing, Welfare Benefits, Employment, Debt, Family Law and many others.
Citizens Advice has published its latest evidence on Personal Independence Payments (PIP).
PIP is a benefit that people can claim to help with additional living costs if they have an illness, disability or mental health condition. The benefit is awarded based on the impact these health problems have on the claimant’s everyday life.
The statistics and case studies presented in the report suggest that the system has definitely improved, with better communication from the Department for Work and Pensions and reduced waiting times while applications are processed. These were serious causes for concern in the past and so the improvement is welcome.
However, Citizens Advice’s clients are still having issues that need to be addressed. Claimants are often asked to travel long distances to inaccessible assessment centres, journeys which their health conditions may make difficult or impossible to reach. Furthermore claimants and care professionals alike can be unclear about what information to submit and when, and there are barriers to submission such as cost and timescales. These issues are contributing to the rising mandatory reconsideration and appeal rates.
